“Cupid draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover's heart for me, for me”
(Opening lyrics to Sam Cooke’s 1961 song “Cupid”)
When Cupid releases his arrow, let’s hope it’s aimed (and your sales are, too) at the $25.9 billion expected spend for Valentine’s Day 2024. That represents a nearly 10% increase over V-Day sales in 2023 and equals an average spend of $192.80 per person.
You know the basics: men spend nearly two times as much as women for this holiday, 35% of V-Day shoppers purchase online, and cards, chocolates and sweets, flowers (of course!), and lingerie, still top shopping lists for Valentine’s buyers.
Even if your online store doesn’t seem like the perfect place for Cupid to shop, think again. Traditional gifts are still going to carry the day.
But have you considered?:
- Targeted popups (free shipping, “we love YOU” discounts) Spell out your sale in heart-shaped candies?
- Spell out your sale in heart-shaped candies?
- Valentine’s Day collections or bundles
- Matchy-match underwear (or nearly anything for that matter)
- Cupid Sale
- Self-love Sales (how to spoil yourself, especially if unattached–see below)
- Sales for Singles (127 million people 18 or older are single!)
- Use emojis in your promotional email subject lines to stand out; link it to the urgency to order ❤️💘👄💟
- Tell a love story using customer ratings that show your store and merchandise is L-O-V-E-D
- Feature what your employees would want from your online store for V-Day (with links to the item, of course)
- In social media and email don’t forget hashtags. Look for some that are more unusual/fun such as:
- #TheseChocolatesTasteJustLikeWax
- #DateWithMyDoggo
- #GalentiinesDay
- #FutureMrsKelce
- #ILoveYouMore
Most of these ideas are easy to spin up and we are sure you have some clever concepts of your own. The main message here is that Valentine’s Day is Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Launch something for Valentine’s Day–today!
